Your wedding day is a whirlwind of emotions, laughter, and unforgettable moments. While the cake gets eaten and the flowers wilt, your wedding photos will remain a timeless keepsake. That’s why choosing the right photographer is crucial, and knowing when to book them is equally important. So, when should you secure your shutterbug for your special day? Let’s dive in!
The Golden Rule: As Soon As Possible

I’m guilty of it too, I procrastinate. But when it comes to your wedding there are some things you can wait on and others….not so much. Skilled and experienced photographers get booked fast, sometimes even a year or more in advance, especially during peak wedding seasons (spring and fall). For me, April and October are always my first booked months. So once you have a date and venue set, start sending out those inquiries.
But let’s break it down below:
12-18 Months Out:
- This is the sweet spot for booking your photographer. If you have a specific photographer in mind this is the ideal timeframe.
- You’ll have a wider range of photographers to choose from and more flexibility in scheduling engagement sessions.
- You’ll have more time to review portfolios, discuss your vision, and ensure a perfect fit.
6-12 Months Out:
- You can still find excellent photographers, but availability might be more limited.
- Peak season dates will likely be filling up fast at this point.
- Start narrowing down your choices and schedule consultations promptly.
Less Than 6 Months Out:
- This is considered last-minute booking.
- Your options will be very limited, and you may need to compromise on your ideal photographer.
- Be ready to spend more time finding a photographer.
Factors to consider:
- Day of the week: Saturdays are the first to go!
- Limited amount of weddings: Photographers only take on so many weddings a year to ensure we give you the best experience.
- Location: Popular venues or even destination weddings require earlier bookings.
- Peak Months:
- Spring: March, April, May
- Fall: September, October, November
WHY you should book early!
- Peace of mind: This way you can focus more on your engagement and other aspects of your wedding.
- Engagement Session: Early booking allows for you to schedule your engagement session and send out Save the Dates in a timely manner. My most booked package includes an engagement session so this way we get to know each other!
Don’t Delay!
Your wedding photos will be cherished for generations. Investing in a skilled photographer and booking them early is a crucial step in ensuring your memories are captured beautifully. So, start your research, schedule consultations, and secure your photographer to capture the magic of your special day.
